Layers are exactly what the name suggests, like layers of an Onion or a cake but more like panes of glass placed on top of each other, making the image (as long as its viewed from above) appear as a single image..

Used for:
Layers are a way to edit the image but maintain the ability to revert to the original image, this can be very handy as some times a particular effect can look great at first and then you may change your mind..

More complex usage
Layers don't really get more complex, what does get complex however, is managing the layers when working with multiple layers , Naming each layer (helps if the name is descriptive) is highly recommended when working with multiple layers, it makes specific layers easier to find at a later date.
